The Tradition Golf Classic – May 2009

The beautifully manicured and always challenging Marine Drive Golf Club was the host golf course to this year’s Tradition Golf Classic. The tournament is an essential piece of the Museum’s fundraising program, as it accounts for fully 30% of the annual operating income, on average.

Twenty nine teams teed it up on a spectacularly beautiful Monday May 25th and when the day concluded it was the Marine Drive team, taking full advantage of playing their home course that wound up on top. The team of Tim Hopkins, Marj Allen, Derek Cook and Shirley Verley took home beautifully framed, and suitable inscribed, photographs of the 17th hole at the host course and golf for four at the brand new Dick Zokol creation, Sagebrush Golf and Sporting Club in Merritt.

Finishing in second place was Coast Hotel’s Mark Hope, with his team of Shu Naito, Brett Brown and David Flaa. The third place team was made up of Sal Audia, Bob King, of GNK Insurance together with Jung Wan and Don North.

The format of the day, and one reason the event is so popular, is a team four ball par points with handicaps added to the gross points. Everyone gets to play their own ball on one of BC’s finest golf courses on a day that includes lunch, tee gifts, dinner and great camaraderie......all in the spirit of supporting the BC Golf Museum and Hall of Fame!

Next year the tournament will be hosted by The University Golf Club, followed in 2011 by the Vancouver Golf Club. In 2012 it will be hosted by Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club (site of the 2011 Canadian Open) and in 2013 the tournament will be hosted by Beach Grove Golf and Country Club

A very special thank you to the following sponsors of holes, prizes and auction items for The Tradition...without their valuable support, the event could not be a success and the financial future of the Museum would be negatively impacted....

What's Happening at the Museum

This month, thanks to Mark Hope of Coast Hotels the Museum will be staging a long drive contest with hickory clubs at the Coast Hotel and Resorts annual fundraising tournament at Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club. It will be an opportunity to allow golfers to sample the technology of 100 years ago, for the Museum to raise its awareness and to raise some much needed funds for continuing operations.

We will also be attending the BC Women’s Hospital Foundation tournament at University Golf Club staging a hickory hole on the par 3 16th hole. Again it is an opportunity to let golfers play a par 3 with hickory shafted clubs and feel what it was like playing ‘way back when’.

The Board of Directors from Shaughnessy G&CC will be holding their June Board meeting at the Museum as they make plans to celebrate their golf club’s centennial and prepare to host the Canadian Open in 2011.

Trivia Contest for June

Prize:
Golf for two at the University GC

Background:
The June trivia question, comes from our good friend at bcgolfnews.com, Barry Sharpe. The BC Amateur Championships for men and women will be conducted by the BCGA in July. The men will play at Duncan Meadows GC and the women at Canoe Creek GC in Salmon Arm.

Question:
On only one occasion has a husband and wife managed to win their respective BC Amateur titles in the same year. Who was the couple, and what was the year?

Click here to enter your answer. We'll announce the winner in next month's newsletter.

May Trivia Winner

The May question was 'what year was the stymie rule abolished' and the correct answer was 1952. The decision was made in 1951 but the rules are updated and changes put into effect every four years and 1952 was the year the rule was effectively changed. The majority of golf competitions were changing from match play to stroke play and time was also a factor in the decision.

Our winner, again from a number of entrants with the correct answer, is Dann Konkin
