Founders of the Golf Museum Honoured

The BCGA, now known as Golf British Columbia, continued its tradition of honouring deserving members of the BC golfing community. In 2008 Doug Roxburgh was honoured for his incredible competitive accomplishments over many years. In 2009 Arv Olson, the dean of golf writers in this part of the world was recognized. This year the Association decided to honour the three Founders of the BC Golf Museum, Mike Riste, Dick White, and Harry White.

While many people gave of their time and money, these three were the ones who had the vision and got the project going. Thirty six golfers, including Hall of Famers Dave Barr and Dick Zokol, had breakfast in the Golf Museum, catered by the staff from the University Golf Club. After breakfast all the golfers teed off in a mini shotgun start and played the beautiful University Golf Club. While that was going on, Steve Darling from Global TV was doing live cut ins from the comfort of the 17th tee box, to his morning news show! He interviewed Kris Jonasson who announced the creation of The Founders Cup to be awarded to the Senior Order of Merit winner. He also talked about the new unveiling of the Golf British Columbia brand as a way to engage with more golfers, particularly those who are not club members.

Later Barrie McWha, Executive Director of BC Golf House, talked about the hickory golf program that is being rolled out this year as a way for Golf House to engage with more golfers and raise awareness of the BC Golf House Society and its activities. At the luncheon that followed golf, Dave Barr reminisced about the opening of the Museum 21 years ago when he teed off from the front porch with a feather ball and hickory shafted iron. Kent Gilchrist from the Vancouver Province spoke about his memories of the Golf Museum and then the three Founders each addressed the gathering. Our thanks go out to Golf British Columbia for the initiative and to the University Golf Club for hosting this wonderful day.

News from Port Alberni...
a Hickory Hole in One

Long time Canadian PGA Professional, Pat Little, co-owner of The Hollies GC in Port Alberni along with wife Jackie, was out playing recently and recorded his fourth hole in one! This time however he was playing with his hickory set. On the 145 yard second hole using his ‘mashie' (what we would now call a 5 iron) Pat knocked it in the ‘jar'!! Congratulations, Pat.

Still with the Little family, Jackie continues to progress in her recovery from a car accident in December. After injuring her shoulder and ankle when hit by a vehicle as she was crossing the street, she is now back working on her short game and hopefully we will see the recently inducted Honoured Member of the Golf Hall of Fame of BC back competing on the golf course.

The 23rd Edition of The Tradition
Golf Classic

This year the Tradition Golf Classic was hosted at University Golf Club. This event is the largest fundraising activity conducted by the Society, and while the field was lower in numbers than in past years, and a little rain did fall, nothing could dampen the enthusiasm of the 25 teams that took to the course. A nice bbq lunch followed by a shotgun start and the day was underway.

Mike Riste and Bob Tate were hosting the hickory hole on the third hole, where golfers got to experience teeing off with a hickory iron and playing a 1910 replica mesh ball. They also putted out with hickory putters.

Closest to the hole winners each received a prize courtesy of Cleveland Golf Srixon Canada, one of our new corporate patrons this year. Phyllis Lashchuk and Brad Gamble each took a home a dozen balls for their efforts!

Weatherman (retired) Norm Grohmann sets up to hit his hickory tee shot on the 3rd hole....by the way – it rained that day!

Steve Jenkins and Holly Horwood each won their respective long drive competitions, while Shawn Clarkin and Al Sutherland won kp's on the seventh hole. No one however was able to win the new Land Rover put up by our friends at MCL Motorcars. Investors Syndicate had a trip to the British Open up for an ace on the 11th and GNK Insurance had $10,000 up for grabs on the 16th hole. No winners in either case! The team of Kris Jonasson, Holly Horwood, Phyllis Laschuk, and Jay Janower from Global TV came out the winners and took home framed originals photographs of the University Golf Club.

The team of (l to r) Dave Scott, Bob King of GNK Insurance, Ted Kagetsu, and Linda King received their special team prize from Golf House Society President John Snyder

Canadian Golfer to be Recognized Nationally at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club

The induction of Brent Franklin into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum will be taking place, here at Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club on July 18, 2010. This induction will mark the Hall of Fame's 67th induction. Brent Franklin's golfing record is certainly Hall of Fame worthy.

Franklin enjoyed a great deal of success as a junior golfer. He won the 1983 and 1984 Canadian Junior Boys Championships as well as the 1983 and 1984 British Columbia Junior Boys Championships before earning three All-American selections in university. In addition to winning the 1985 Alberta Amateur Championship, Franklin is just the second person to win three straight Canadian Men's Amateur Championships (1985 to 1987). He was also a member of the Canadian team which won the 1986 World Amateur Team Championship.

Franklin turned professional in 1988 and then later that year went on to win the Canadian PGA Championship. He was selected as Canadian Professional Golf Tour's Rookie of the Year in 1988 after claiming six top-10 finishes in just eight Tour starts. Tickets are available for purchase through contacting the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum at 1-800-263-0009 ext. 462. All guests are required to purchase a ticket in advance of the induction at a cost of $60 per person. Included in the ticket cost is a cocktail reception with bar and the formal induction of Brent Franklin.

Hickory Golf....

Harley Davidson Motorcycles once had a slogan that went “If I had to explain it, you wouldn’t understand”. The same could be said of hickory golf.

As you read earlier in this piece, Pat Little had a hole in one using his hickory set. I met a number of players at a conference I attended last fall that play the majority of their golf with their hickory sets!

That said, there is an opportunity to experience hickory golf by contacting the Golf House.....on occasional evenings starting at 6 PM at University Golf Course we will convene small groups of a maximum of 20 golfers to enjoy a 9 hole round using hickory sets and circa 1910 balls. Golf will be followed by some refreshments and snacks in the Golf House. If this is something that you and some of your friends may wish to experience, please contact me at 604-222-4653 or bmcwha@bcgolfhouse.com

I recently was reading a magazine for hickory enthusiasts and it listed 30 events between April and October throughout the US, in Canada, Sweden, Finland, Australia, England, Scotland and France.
