The BC Golf House Society Tradition Golf Classic is May 26

On Wednesday May 26th the participants will take to the links at the University Golf Club for the 23rd edition of the annual fundraiser.

There are still spots available in the field and I encourage...even ‘urge’....all those who might consider playing to visit our website and enter, or call the Office at the Golf House 604-222-4653, and we will find a spot for you.

It is a great day of friendship, food, fun, golf, and prizes on a great old golf course. This is the major fundraising opportunity for the BC Golf House Society each year and anything less than 132 players will be an ‘opportunity lost’!

In addition to the above, there will be silent and live auction items and it is an all-inclusive price - $250 for lunch, tee gifts, golf with a car, dinner, and prizes!

Should you have any questions please contact the BC Golf House at 604-222-4653 or bmcwha@bcgolfhouse.com

RCGA > Golf Canada / BCGA > Golf British Columbia

A couple of weeks back the RCGA formally announced its plan to rebrand using the Golf Canada name and a new distinctive logo. The objective is to engage more players, particularly those who are not club members (the majority of golfers). In so doing it is hoped that the membership will grow and more golfers will have a greater connection with the national sport organization. In putting the package together a number of new consumer benefits are available. Check out www.golfcanada.ca.

At the same time, the BCGA, typically a leader among provincial golf organizations, is the first such organization to make the change in concert with the RCGA. The BCGA will now be seen as Golf British Columbia, not to be confused with Golf BC, the corporate entity that is both a golf course owner and operator of 11 different properties in BC and one in Hawaii.

Under the new revenue generating aspects of the Golf Canada brand, the provincial organizations will share financially with the national body. Please visit www.golfbritishcolumbia.ca.

BCGA (Golf British Columbia) is a major supporter of BC Golf House

The BCGA has long been the primary patron for the BC Golf House Society. Along with the support of the BC Chapter of the National Golf Course Owners and the support of the PNGA, it would be safe to say the BCGA has provided the leadership in funding for the Society. These donations along with the proceeds of the annual fundraising tournament constitute 80% of the revenue that sustains the Museum and Hall of Fame.

Derek Glazer, Former President of the BC Golf House Society Honoured

From L to R; Pam Schabaz, President of the PNGA, Cliff Shahbaz, and Derek Glazer

Derek Glazer, a member of the Richmond G&CC and a former President of the BC Golf House Society, was honoured at the Pacific Northwest Golf Association annual meetings with a Distinguished Service Award for his long time volunteer efforts for the association. Well known for his role as Starter at so many events over the years, it was a very fitting recognition for someone who exemplifies what volunteerism is all about.

PNGA Annual Meeting Report

From L to R; Barrie McWha, BC Golf House Executive Director, incoming President of the PNGA, Dr. Jack Lamey of the Seattle Golf Club, outgoing President, Cliff Shahbaz from Portland, Oregon, who served a 3 year term

I had the honour of being the keynote speaker to the PNGA Women’s Division meeting at Bellingham G&CC. My story of the traditions, history and equipment evolution in golf seemed to keep the group’s interest. Berne Neufeld, the driving force behind the Victoria Golf Club’s Evans Caddie program is the new Chair of the PNGA Women’s Division and did a masterful job of organizing and chairing the meeting.

As the BC Golf House Executive Director, I was invited to present an update on the activities of BC Golf House to the Board of Directors of the PNGA. Explaining the need to be more relevant to more golfers, and bring value to those who support the activities of the BC Golf House Society, I was able to advise them that we were working towards being the umbrella organization for the BC Evans Caddie Scholarship program, as well as being in a position to issue tax receipts to those Canadians wishing to financially support the great program that allows caddies with great marks, a strong community service record, a solid caddie record over the high school years, and a family financial need to receive a four year full scholarship to world class universities.

I was also able to explain the work we are doing in promoting hickory golf to BC, again in an effort to raise awareness of the Museum and the work of the Society.

Continuing a tradition started by my predecessor, Dorothy Brown, I was pleased to preside over a ceremony dating back several hundred years at golf clubs in Scotland, where the outgoing President, Cliff Shahbaz, and the newly elected incoming President, Dr. Jack Lamey, tasted some fine wine using the Captain’s Spoons, two beautifully crafted silver spoons dating back to the 1800’s. They then exchanged the badges of office and wished each other good health as they each moved in to a new phase of life for each.

Hickory Program is Now a Reality

The Vancouver Golf Club will be celebrating its centennial this June and the BC Golf House Society will be there. We will be providing 25-30 sets of hickory clubs, complete with vintage golf bags and golf balls (circa 1910) for a member event that will commemorate what the golf was like when the Club was first formed.

We will also be attending other similar events throughout the golf season.....the grand opening day for Highland Pacific GC in Victoria, the Insurance Brokers’ of BC golf tournament at Cordova Bay GC, as well as men’s nights and special events...each a great opportunity to celebrate the history of the game and give today’s golfer a chance to experience what the game was like 100 years ago!
