Hickory Golf
Hickory golf is a traditional form of the game played with hickory‑shafted golf clubs, similar to how the sport was played in the early 20th century before steel shafts became the standard. This version of golf emphasizes skill, finesse, and connection with the history of the game, offering a unique experience that reflects golf’s rich heritage.
Hickory Golf at BC Golf House
The BC Golf House proudly promotes hickory golf as a way to introduce members of the golf community to the roots of the sport. Through demonstrations and participation opportunities, golfers can experience how golf was played in the 1920s using authentic hickory clubs.
How We Present Hickory Golf
At charity tournaments and special events, the BC Golf House sets up a demonstration hole where participants can:
Tee off with a 1920s hickory‑shafted golf club
Play traditional shots using authentic equipment
Learn about the history and evolution of golf through hands‑on experience
Typically, these demonstrations are held on shorter par‑3 holes (approximately 135–145 yards for men and 100–120 yards for women), allowing golfers of all skill levels to try hickory golf in a fun and engaging setting.
Club Celebrations & Special Play
For golf clubs celebrating a significant anniversary, the BC Golf Museum may provide a small set of hickory clubs (usually a 6‑club Sunday bag) for members to play 9 or 18 holes using authentic hickory equipment. This adds a special historical element to anniversary celebrations and promotes appreciation for the early era of golf.
Why Play Hickory Golf?
Hickory golf allows golfers to step back in time and enjoy golf as it was originally played. It encourages:
A deeper understanding of shot‑making and strategy
Appreciation of golf’s evolution and craftsmanship
Fun, relaxed competition that highlights tradition over technology
