This post shows the results for the regional women’s tournaments held on Vancouver Island. The earliest tournament, the Victoria City and District Ladies Amateur, began in 1920. In 1933, the CLGU BC Branch was formed and created two divisions in BC: The Vancouver Island division and the Mainland division. In 1955, the Mainland divided to form two separate divisions: the Mainland and the Interior. In 1974, the CLGA BC Branch changed these three divisions into nine districts. District One and District Six were the districts on Vancouver Island.

Huntting Cup Matches
In 1922, Mrs. Foster Huntting donated a cup which was to be competed for each year by a team of players from Jericho and Shaughnessy Golf Clubs against a team from Victoria and Royal Colwood Golf Clubs. These matches were managed by the CLGU BC Branch. Beginning in 1937, they were played on the day preceding the BC Ladies' Championship at the same host club. Suspended during 1940-1945 due to the war, the matches resumed in 1947 with a new format, with players now chosen from Vancouver and Victoria City, rather than within specific clubs. In 1964 the BC Championships went to Penticton, requiring future Huntting Cup Matches to select a venue and date. Matches continued to alternate between Vancouver and Victoria.In 1969, the competition expanded to include players from throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. This changed again when the Districts were formed in 1974; players could be chosen from District 1, Victoria and surrounding area, and Districts 2, 5, and 8, Vancouver and surrounding area.
After the districts formed, management of this tournament was given to the Sweeny Cup group in Vancouver and the Harris-Erickson group in Victoria, as the majority of players chosen were from these two groups. In 1972, it was voted that future players would play matches on handicap rather than at scratch to make the competition more exciting. A few years later, the playing field was restricted to players belonging to either the Sweeny or Harris-Erickson groups.

CLGU Vancouver Island Foursomes Championship
This tournament was first held in April 1948 at Royal Colwood Golf Club and was made possible through the efforts of members of the Executive Committee of the Vancouver Island Division of the BC CLGU. The first tournament saw 74 couples competing.The tournament was originally designed for higher handicap players and held in the spring; this was meant to let these players experience competitive play in a fun environment early in the season so they would feel inspired to go and improve their game throughout the season. In the original format, the foursomes featured a Medal Qualifying round followed by Match play in flights of 16. The players would compete over a period of 5 weeks on the 18 hole courses in Victoria, although the club hosting the Qualifying Round would also host the Finals. The handicap limit was 36 and partners were to have no more than a spread of 8 between their handicaps. The partners also needed to belong to the same club.
Due to increase in interest, the handicap limit was reduced to 35 within a short time of the tournament beginning. In 1954, the handicap spread was increased to 10 but players still often had a difficult time finding partners in their own clubs. Due to bad weather and a change in the CLGU handicapping system, the tournament began to be held in the fall and handicap limits were lowered further to 32.
In 1974 when the province was divided into Districts, the competition was renamed the CLGA Victoria and District Foursomes Championship and players from the northern parts of the island were no longer eligible to play.
As demand for this tournament continued, a rota system was adopted whereby entries from clubs were based on the size of the ladies' membership. This changed in 1995 to allow 120 couples to qualify for 96 places in flights for match play. In 2000, this number was reduced to 96 couples qualifying for 80 places.
